The Ram Sethu CanalIn 2004, UPA government mooted the SSCP project, i.e. Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project. And from that time only it has been the target of disapproval from environmental advocators along with spiritual enthusiasts.

About the project

This project envisions digging up the shallow sea amid the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar to formulate a narrow shipping passage connecting the east as well as the west coast of India. And along with it obviating the present pester of circumnavigating Sri Lanka to arrive at the eastern coast of India and vice versa.

The overall estimated length of the channel is to be about 152.2 km. And to create it would need two phases of dredging or blasting the 20 km extended coral reef podium called as Adam’s Bridge or several calls it as Ram Sethu, and along with it, 54 km extended Bay of Bengal parts. The third section falls in Palk Bay with 78 km of total length and which supposedly needs no dredging as this region comprise a clearance depth of 12 m.

Sethusamudram is that part of the ocean which continuously overpasses by natural sedimentation processes.   Ram Sethu is a prolonged stretch of limestone shoals that sprint from Pamban Island close To Rameswaram to Manar Island off of Srilankan north coast. Owing to the shallow ocean floor in this region natural processes have shaped coral podiums here for many years. 20000 years ago, during the glaciations era, numerous parts of Indian coast counting Sethusamudram might be out on top of the water. From the 20000 years ago to the 6000 years ago sea level progressively mounted worldwide owing to melting of glaciers.

And because of this coral polyps, one more time have grown superior on newly submerged podiums. And so the platforms may be utilized by human migrants to cross oceans. Ramayana, the Indian epic, refers to a supposed land bridge in this area and those who trust grasp it as the formation of Lord Ram and his army constructed to accomplish Lanka.

Primarily appraisal by NEERI, i.e. National Environmental Engineering Research Institute declared an environmental danger and certified the probability of this project. However many worries have been lifted up from diverse sections, on the constancy of projected canal along with ecological blow of the project. Its total estimated cost is 25000 crore rupees. At that time government agencies seemed to display an unusual enthusiasm and to brush to the side many sore queries and keeping the community in the dark regarding the canal’s steadiness and unfavorable environmental influence.

In 2007 Supreme Court used a temporary order and stayed the dredging of Ram Sethu after accepting a request that it had substantial religious value for Hindus. In 2008 UPA government consequently bound to comprise a committee headed by R.K. Pachauri who was then director general of Energy and Resource Institute to search the substitute way that would not influence Ram Sethu’s veracity. His committee came to know that this project could cause a severe risk to ecosystem even later than adopting an alternating way. This report was also stern of government’s economic claims.

Facts that are not known by many

The region of Palk Bay is a sediment sink, and diverse stretches here through which canal passes considered to have variable sedimentation rates.  Till present, the sedimentation dynamics in the region is not understood completely which includes the net value of sediment transported in the basin and the pattern in which it is deposited. So all this raises a lot of serious concerns regarding the upholding of dredging.

One more significant risk factor in this region is Cyclonic storms as the project area mainly considered as very susceptible to storms. According to past observations in 1964 December storm gush and washed away the Pamban Bridge along with Dhanushkodi Island. Cyclones can and carry out unleash self-directed dynamics of their own that reallocate sediment and scatter the dredge material. So in what way a cyclonic storm will alter the sedimentary funds of Ram Sethu area is not entirely known.

It can be said that some of the material to be dredged can be much more than what is planned. And also cyclones also require a revaluation of the amount of dredged material to be deserted at numerous areas. Consequently, SSCP’s consideration regarding the hit by a cyclone or tsunami is a valid worry. Multiple computer mock-ups too put forward the concerns regarding the central portions of Palk Bay as well as these areas located to its ease.

This means that along with Palk Bay these regions also get sediments rendering them more opaque. These models also signify that waves were entering the bay from the north as well as south related to how the canal is associated.

From this one, more queries arise that will efforts to get deeper the canal generate a new deepwater path for a future tsunami to arrive at India’s west coast? As per the experts,   the answer to this question is yes and says that the canal’s Bay entrance will shaft the Tsunami all the way through southern Sri Lanka to south Kerala, also, to also build the waves taller in the procedure.

The safety is the third and the primary concern. As for where the dredged material is disposed safely without damaging marine as well as the terrestrial environment? For these several experts consider that sediment slides could make out the channel by their own unhinged. Releasing of ships moving the channel as thin as one SSCP will pollute water as well as air. In addition to it is a rogue ship collides,  the resulting ecological calamity will be much more awful.  On the other hand, if ships are going to be directed by tolls that would be much more expensive than sailing about Sri Lanka.

Research on Ram Sethu was built naturally or by intelligent creatures will be conducted

In the meantime, it was declared that the pilot project would be conducted by Indian Council of Historical research to determine that Ram Sethu was constructed naturally or else by intelligent creatures. In what way this statement will be scientifically confirmed?  Author of the latest book on the Ganges titled River of Life, River of Death, Victor Mallet asks the relevant question that ‘how can the Ganges be adored by many Indians and at the same time abused by the same populace? And for sure the same issue will be waiting for the Ram Sethu project too.

Most importantly the Coral Reef podium amid Thoothukudi plus Rameswaram is informed as an aquatic biosphere reserve of India.  If this project becomes realism, it will finish the whole receptive environment along with the source of revenue of thousands of people too.

So we conclude that this Ram Sethu project should be crumb out speedily as there are various valid reasons along with many scientific arguments are sufficient to do that.
