Over the years the aviation industry has grown in leaps and bounds. From the time of its invention, the concept of flying has changed. Travelling in the air is always fun; seeing the world from such a height gives immense pleasure and excitement. With the advent of high-end technology, many air crafts have come up that are so fast, that it can surpass the speed of sound. These fastest air crafts are mainly used in military operations.

Below are top 10 list of the fastest aircraft in the world:

1. North American X-15

Fastest Aircrafts

This aircraft is termed as the fastest manned aircraft in the world. It is operated by United States Air Force and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It can travel at a speed of 7,200 km/h. It was first introduced in the year 1959. Since it is extremely fast, it does use the traditional flying system, for example, it uses rocket thrusters instead of using drag over the fin. Due to its specifications, it can travel at high altitude at 100 kilometers per hour. This aircraft was used as an operational space plane.

2. Lockheed SR-71 Black Bird

It was first used in the year 1966 by both USAF and NASA. In that year, more than 32 black birds were constructed for experimentation. The inventor of this aircraft is American aerospace engineer “Kelley Jhonson”. Between 1964 and 1998 none of these air crafts lost to any enemy action and 12 were lost in accidents. It is also known as “Habu”.

3. Lockheed YF-12

It is mainly designed for United States Air force, it has got an American interceptor prototype with a super speed of Mach 3.35. It looks almost similar to Lockheed SR-71 Black Bird. It holds the world record of traveling at a speed of 3200 km per hour at 80,000ft.  It was termed as the world’s largest manned interceptor till now.

4. Mikoyan MiG-25

Soviet Union’s Mikoyan-Gurevich bureau first came up with this design. It is also known as Foxbat. It is extremely sturdy and it is made up of stainless steel. It first came in the year 1965 and another prototype was made in the year 1970. It is super fast and it is considered second after SR-71 Black Bird.

5. Bell X-2 Starbuster

It is mainly a research aircraft developed by both US Air Force and Bell Aircraft Corporation. It was mainly build to understand that how an aircraft fly at a certain speed and height. It was made in the year 1945 and since then it has made a mark in the aviation world. History shows there were two Bell X-2 built.

6. XB- 70 Valkyrie

This huge aircraft weighs up to 240 kilograms and it travels faster than the speed of sound. It was made in such a way so that it can withstand any nuclear blast and escape the Soviet Aircraft. Since it traveled at a huge speed, the heat generated was up to 330-degree celsius in some areas.

7. Mikoyan Mig- 31

It is known as Foxhound and it was developed by the Soviet Union. The Russian Defense Ministry has used this plane for quite some time now. It travels at a super speed of Mach 2.83. In the year 1994 more than 400 to 500 MIG was made after that they stopped making it.

8. Mc Donnell Douglas F-15 Eagle

One of the most renowned planes. This plane was mainly used by the US Air force. The build and design is superb and weighs up to 18,000 kg. In 1976 it was first built and from then it is still used by the US Air force.

9. General Dynamics F-111

One of the fastest aircraft used by the Australian Air force. It can run at a speed of 2.5 Mach.  Till now more than 563 units have been made and were used extensively by US air force and Australian Air force.

10. Sukhoi Su-27

It’s a Russian plane and was first made in the year 1985.  It is a two- seater plane and it is capable to handle all kinds of weather condition. Till now more than 800 units have been made.
