Ming-Na Wen is a Chinese-American actress. She became popular with her voice role as the princess Fa Mulan in the animated Disney feature films ‘Mulan’ and ‘Mulan II’ and today she is one of the most sought after lead in `voice acting’. She has made a mark for herself in the film and television industries through her portrayals in various movies and serials. She is best known for her portrayal of Dr. Jing-Mei Chen (Deb) in the hit series ‘ER’.
Ming Na Wen was born to Cantonese parents in Coloane (Island of Macau) and moved to the United States when she was four years old. She participated in her first Easter play when in the third grade which made her fall in love with acting. She had played the role of a ‘klutz bunny’.
She went to high school at the Mt. Lebanon suburb of Pennsylvania. While being in school she chose to be called Doris or Maggie. She was a brilliant student. She went to the Carnegie Mellon University where she graduated with high honours and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre.
After leaving college Ming-Na Wen moved back to New York City where she landed roles at theaters such as The Ensemble Studio Theater and Playwrights Horizons. Wen’s first television role was in the children’s television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood in 1985.
She became well known after getting her first break in television through the kid’s series ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ (1985). She played the character Lien Hughes in the hit soap opera ‘As the World Turns’ from the year 1988 to 1991. After starring in the acclaimed 1993 film The Joy Luck Club she bagged the role of Dr. Jing-Mei “Deb” Chen on the NBC drama series ER. Wen also played Chun-Li in Street Fighter and co-starred in the sitcom The Single Guy from 1995 to 1997.
She became a famous voice actor with many animated movies like `Mulan’ (1998) and `Mulan II’ (2005). In ‘The Batman’ animation series (2004-05) she was the voice of the character of Detective Ellen Yin, and in ‘Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within’ (2001) her voice is well known as that of Aki Ross. She won the Annie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Voice Acting by a Female Performer in an Animated Feature Production in 1998 for her voice role in ‘Mulan.’ She played the lead character in the NBC drama series `Inconceivable’ (2005) and the Fox series ‘Vanished’ (2006) where she portrayed the role of an FBI agent. She has also played a small role as a college professor in the comedy series George Lopez. In 2007 she appeared in the series ‘Two and a Half Men’ (as Charlie Sheen’s love interest) in four episodes. She played a guest part in ‘Private Practice’ and ‘Boston Legal’ in 2008. She was a cast of ‘Stargate Universe’ a TV series where she played the part of Camile Wray. She appeared as one of the hosts in ‘Disney through the Decades’, a short documentary about the history of the Walt Disney Company. She acted in the Syfy series ‘Eureka’ from 2011 to 2012. Wen plays Agent Melinda May in the ABC action drama series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She played a guest role in the Disney channel’s show ‘Sofia the First’.
